Al-Shamsiyya Mosque and Madrasa is one of the best-known historic mosques of Dhamar and has been a centre of Zaydi learning for centuries. It was begun by Imam al-Mutawakkil Sharaf al-Din Yahya and completed in 950 AH by his son Shams al-Din, after whom it is named. Students from outside the city lived around it, and it was known for teaching blind students. The prayer hall is a rectangular building of black stone with a flat roof on four rows of columns and arches, and the upper part of the minaret is built of brick. The mosque stands in the al-Jarajish quarter between the old markets of Dhamar.
