This shrine in the valley of Shi'b Hud, east of Tarim in Wadi Hadramawt, has been honoured for centuries as the grave of Nabi Hud, the prophet sent to the people of 'Ad, whose land the Qur'an calls al-Ahqaf. A maqam in his name is also honoured in the Wadi al-Salam cemetery of Najaf. The white domed grave stands high on the slope above a small town of houses that are empty most of the year and come to life during the annual visitation in Sha'ban, when people from across Hadramawt and beyond gather here for several days. A long stairway leads from the valley floor up to the shrine.
