Al-Muhdar Mosque is named after Sayyid Umar al-Muhdar ibn Abd al-Rahman al-Saqqaf (d. 833 AH), the Ba-Alawi scholar who founded the first mosque on the site. It has been enlarged twice since, and its present form dates from 1331 AH. Its square minaret, built of mud brick in 1914 to a design by the Tarim builder Awad Salman Afif, rises about 40 metres and is one of the tallest mud-brick towers in the world and the emblem of Tarim. The mosque has a central courtyard surrounded by arcades and stands in the heart of the old town.
