Sayyid Ali ibn Hasan al-Attas (1121–1172 AH), known as Sahib al-Mashhad, was a scholar, poet and Sufi of the al-Attas family. He founded al-Mashhad in Wadi Daw'an as a place of learning and a sanctuary, and his writings on spiritual practice are still read. His grave lies under one of a group of white and green domes at al-Mashhad, with visitors' shelters around them. The site is a regular stop for travellers between Wadi Hadramawt and Wadi Daw'an, and an annual gathering is held there in his memory.
