The Great Mosque of Shibam, known as the Harun al-Rashid Mosque, is one of the oldest mosques in Yemen, with its foundation placed by tradition in the first years of Islam. It takes its name from the Abbasid caliph Harun al-Rashid, under whose rule it was renovated and endowed, and it was restored again under the Rasulids. It follows the plan of the early mosques, with a prayer hall and an open courtyard surrounded by arcades, and a white minaret. It stands inside the walled city of Shibam among the famous mud-brick tower houses, and Friday and Eid prayers are still held here.
