Sayyid Ali ibn Muhammad al-Habashi (1259–1333 AH) was one of the leading scholars of Hadramawt in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. He settled in Seiyun, where he founded a seminary for students and the al-Riyadh Mosque, and he wrote Simt al-Durar, the mawlid that is recited across the Muslim world in celebration of the Prophet ﷺ. His grave lies under a green dome beside the al-Riyadh Mosque in the centre of Seiyun, with a carved wooden cover over the grave itself. Large numbers of visitors come to Seiyun each year for the gathering held in his memory, when Simt al-Durar is recited at the mosque.
