Shibam is a walled city of mud-brick tower houses rising five to eleven storeys, built mostly in the sixteenth century on a rise in Wadi Hadramawt above the reach of the valley's floods. It is often called the Manhattan of the Desert, and it is inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage site. The town was a capital of Hadramawt in pre-Islamic times. A single gate leads through the wall into narrow streets between the towers, with the Harun al-Rashid Mosque inside. The best view of the city is from the hill on the southern side of the valley, especially at sunset.
