Bir Barhut is a huge natural sinkhole in the desert of al-Mahra, about 30 metres wide at the mouth and more than 100 metres deep. Local folklore long surrounded it with stories of spirits, and it is sometimes called the Well of Hell. In 2021 a team of cavers from Oman descended into it and found caves, waterfalls and cave pearls at the bottom. Visitors view it from the rim, which needs care.
