The Citadel of Hama stands on a great mound in the centre of the city that was settled from the earliest times. In the Middle Ages it was the stronghold of the Ayyubid princes of Hama, the family of Abu al-Fida, before it fell into ruin in later centuries. Today the hill is a park with paths and the best views over the city, the Orontes and the norias.
