The Great Mosque of Hama is one of the oldest mosques in Syria. The site was a pagan temple and then a church before it became a mosque after the Muslim conquest of the city in the time of Umar ibn al-Khattab, and the building was enlarged under the Umayyads and later rulers. It was known for its two medieval minarets and its courtyard with an old treasury raised on columns. The mosque was rebuilt by the people of Hama in its original form, using as much of the old stone as possible. It stands in the old city and is once again a busy place of prayer.
