Khan Rustam Pasha was built in 964 AH (1556) by Rustem Pasha, the Grand Vizier of Sultan Sulayman the Magnificent, on al-Murabit Street in the commercial heart of Hama. A grand gateway leads into a courtyard with a small mosque at its centre, surrounded by halls on two floors. Under the French Mandate it was used as a barracks and called Khan al-Askar. In recent years its ground floor has held craft workshops and its upper floor an orphanage.
