This mosque beside the Orontes in Hama was built in 727 AH (1326) by al-Malik al-Mu'ayyad Abu al-Fida Isma'il, the Ayyubid prince of Hama who was also one of the great geographers and historians of Islam, author of Taqwim al-Buldan and a well-known universal history. He passed away in 732 AH and was buried in the domed mausoleum beside the mosque. The people of Hama call it Jami' al-Hayyat, the Mosque of the Snakes, after a double column in its windows carved with intertwined serpents. It is a peaceful stop on a walk along the river and its famous waterwheels.
