The Bab al-Faraj Clock Tower is one of the landmarks of modern Aleppo, built in 1898–99 near the old gate of Bab al-Faraj. It was designed by the city architect Charles Chartier with the engineer Bakr Sidqi under the Ottoman governor Ra'if Pasha, and inaugurated in 1900 for the twenty-fifth anniversary of Sultan Abd al-Hamid II's accession. Its four faces and stone stalactite decoration echo the minarets of the old city, and it stands beside the National Library, a short walk from the National Museum.
