About Al-Nuri Mosque

The Nuri Mosque of Hama was built by Nur al-Din Zangi in the second half of the twelfth century, on the bank of the Orontes beside the Kilaniyyah bridge. It is the most important surviving Zangid monument in Hama and has a fine square minaret built in bands of light and dark stone. In the first half of the twentieth century it was a centre of the religious and scholarly revival of Hama. It stands in one of the most attractive parts of the old city, close to the waterwheels.
