Al-Madina Souq is the great covered market of old Aleppo, a network of narrow vaulted streets some thirteen kilometres long that is counted among the largest historic markets in the world. Most of its sections date from the fourteenth century onwards and are named after the trades once practised in them, such as the wool, copper and soap markets, with khans for merchants set among them. It runs from Bab Antakiyah to the foot of the Citadel.
