About Gate of the Corner

The Gate of the Corner, located in Córdoba’s historic centre, formed part of the city’s Islamic defensive walls. It once guarded the Puerta del Rincón (“Gate of the Corner”), one of the entrances to the eastern side of the medina during the Umayyad and later Almohad periods. The tower was built with stone and tapial (rammed earth), typical of Andalusí military architecture, and was designed to protect the gate and the adjoining section of wall. As with other gates of Córdoba, it functioned both as a defensive structure and as a control point for trade and travellers entering the city. After the Christian conquest in 1236, the tower continued to serve as part of the city’s fortifications, though the original gate was eventually lost. Today, the Torre de la Puerta del Rincón survives as one of the few tangible reminders of Córdoba’s eastern wall circuit, standing as testimony to the city’s Islamic fortifications and their role in safeguarding the caliphal capital.
