The Museo del Guadamecí Omeya in Córdoba is a unique museum dedicated to the ancient Andalusī art of guadamecí—a luxury leatherwork technique perfected in Umayyad Córdoba. The craft takes its name from Ghadames in North Africa, but it was in Córdoba, under the Umayyads, that guadamecí reached its highest refinement. Artisans would carefully prepare tanned leather, emboss it with intricate patterns, and decorate it with polychrome and gold to produce wall hangings, book covers, and ceremonial objects. The museum was founded by master craftsman Ramón García Romero and later continued by José Carlos Villarejo, who revived and preserved this heritage craft. Its collection includes extraordinary examples of embossed, gilded, and painted leather panels that recreate the splendour of Umayyad Córdoba. Many of the designs are inspired by the motifs of the Great Mosque of Córdoba and the palatial city of Madinat al-Zahra, where guadamecí was once produced for caliphal courts. Today, the museum serves both as a gallery of exquisite Andalusī-inspired artwork and as a centre for the preservation of a craft that was once a hallmark of Córdoba’s Islamic golden age.
