About Arch of the Little Gate

The Arco del Portillo is a small surviving gateway in Córdoba’s medieval walls, located in the San Basilio quarter, not far from the Alcázar and the Calahorra Tower. Its name, “Portillo” (“little gate”), reflects its function as a secondary entrance to the city—less monumental than the main gates but still important for local access. The original passage dates back to Islamic Córdoba, when the Umayyad walls enclosed both the medina and its surrounding neighbourhoods. The arch allowed movement between the interior of the walled city and the orchards, gardens, and suburban districts beyond. Like other minor gates, it served the daily life of residents, traders, and farmers, rather than ceremonial or military use. After the Christian conquest of 1236, the gate continued to function, though it was later modified. Today, the Arco del Portillo stands as a modest but authentic reminder of Córdoba’s Islamic fortifications, illustrating how the city was structured with both grand entrances for processions and smaller, practical gateways for everyday life.
