Makkah

Zamzam is the well that sprang up in the valley of Makkah for Sayyidah Hajar and her infant son Nabi Isma'il after she had run in search of water between Safa and Marwa. The settlement of Makkah grew up around it, and in later centuries the well was lost until Abd al-Muttalib, the grandfather of Nabi Muhammad ﷺ, rediscovered it and dug it out again. Pilgrims have drunk from Zamzam throughout history, and the Prophet ﷺ drank from it on his Hajj. The well itself now lies beneath the floor of the mataf, about twenty metres from the Ka'bah, and cannot be seen, but its water is supplied to coolers throughout Masjid al-Haram and Masjid al-Nabawi, and pilgrims carry it home to their families all over the world.
