Makkah
Shi'b Abi Talib was the narrow valley on the east side of Makkah where Banu Hashim had their homes, and it was in this quarter that Nabi Muhammad ﷺ was born. In the seventh year of the prophethood the Quraysh drew up a boycott against Banu Hashim and Banu al-Muttalib for protecting him, and the clan was confined to this valley for about three years. During the boycott no one would trade with them or marry into their families, and they suffered great hunger until the agreement was finally broken and the boycott lifted. The valley has been transformed by the expansion of Masjid al-Haram and the surrounding developments, but the area east of the Haram near the Makkah al-Mukarramah Library is still identified with it.
