Souq Ukaz was the greatest of the seasonal markets of pre-Islamic Arabia, held each year in the month of Dhul Qa'dah on the plain north-east of Taif. Tribes came from across the peninsula to trade, settle disputes and hear the leading poets recite. During his years in Makkah, Nabi Muhammad ﷺ went to Ukaz and the other markets to call the gathered tribes to worship Allah alone, often with his opponents following behind to turn people away from him. The market faded in the early Islamic period, but its site has been revived as a heritage and cultural venue that hosts an annual festival. It lies about thirty-five kilometres north-east of the centre of Taif.
