Safa and Marwa are two small hills close to the Ka'bah. When Sayyidah Hajar was left in the barren valley with her baby, Nabi Isma'il, she ran back and forth between them seven times searching for water or help, until the spring of Zamzam appeared. Her search became a rite of Hajj and Umrah, and every pilgrim walks the same course seven times in what is called the sa'i. Nabi Muhammad ﷺ performed the sa'i here on his Umrahs and his Hajj, and it was from Safa that he first called the clans of Quraysh together to warn them openly about his message. Today the route between the hills, about 450 metres long, is enclosed within a multi-storey gallery of Masjid al-Haram, with a little of the original rock of each hill still visible.
