Bab al-Abbas was a gate on the eastern side of Masjid al-Haram, named after Sayyiduna al-Abbas ibn Abd al-Muttalib, whose house stood opposite it on the Mas'a. Ibn al-Hajj called it Bab al-Jana'iz, probably because funeral prayers were held before it, and it had three doors and thirteen steps. An inscription over it recorded that it was built on the orders of Sultan Murad III in 988 AH. The gate was removed when Masjid al-Haram was enlarged in the twentieth century. Its site lies inside the present mosque, about 55 metres east of the Ka'bah.
