The Mamluk Sultan Qaytbay built a madrasa facing Masjid al-Haram on its north-eastern side, which opened in 885 AH (1480). It taught according to the four schools of law and had a zawiya, a library and a kuttab for children, and it kept its place in the life of the city for a long time. Beside it rose the Qaytbay minaret, one of the seven minarets of the old mosque, on the left as one entered by Bab al-Salam. The madrasa and the minaret were taken down when Masjid al-Haram was enlarged in the twentieth century. Their site lies inside the present mosque, about 85 to 100 metres north-east of the Ka'bah.
