The Black Stone is set into the eastern corner of the Ka'bah, about a metre and a half above the ground, and held in a frame of silver. Tawaf begins and ends at it, and pilgrims kiss it, touch it or point towards it as they pass. Before his prophethood, when Quraysh rebuilt the Ka'bah and the clans disputed who should return the stone to its place, Nabi Muhammad ﷺ laid it on a cloth, had each clan lift a corner, and set it in the wall with his own hands. A green light on the wall of the mosque opposite the stone marks the start and end of each circuit of tawaf. Maqam Ibrahim and Hijr Isma'il, a few metres away, have their own listings.
