About Old Gate of al-Salam

Bab al-Salam was the main gate on the north-eastern side of Masjid al-Haram, also known as the gate of Banu Shaybah and of Banu Abd Shams. It had three doorways, and over it an inscription on white stone recorded that Sultan Suleyman ordered the work in 931 AH. Pilgrims entered by this gate for the tawaf of arrival. Beside it rose the Bab al-Salam minaret, first built by the Abbasid caliph al-Mahdi in 168 AH. The gate and its minaret were removed when Masjid al-Haram was enlarged in the twentieth century. Their site lies inside the present mosque, about 85 to 105 metres north-east of the Ka'bah, on the side facing al-Marwah.
