During Hajj a very large market was held at Arafat close to Jabal al-Rahmah, where every kind of food was sold to the pilgrims and butchers hung their meat in strips between poles. Ibrahim Rifat Pasha photographed it in the early twentieth century, with the line of Masjid Namirah visible beyond. The market is no longer held in this form. Its site lies on the plain of Arafat a short way west of Jabal al-Rahmah.
