Each year the Egyptian and Syrian mahmal caravans, which led the pilgrims of Egypt and Syria to Hajj, pitched their camps here on the plain of Arafat near Jabal al-Rahmah. When the caravans moved on to Muzdalifah after sunset, custom set the Egyptian mahmal on the right and the Syrian on the left, and on reaching Muzdalifah the Egyptian caravan halted while the larger Syrian caravan passed in front of it to its camp. Their sites lie close together on the plain a short way south of Jabal al-Rahmah, as shown on the plan of Muhammad Labib al-Batanuni published in 1911.
