During the Battle of the Trench in 5 AH, Nabi Muhammad ﷺ had his tent pitched on the small hill of Dhubab, from where he could watch over the digging of the trench, and his banner (rayah) was raised here. The mosque that later marked the spot became known as Masjid al-Rayah, the Mosque of the Banner, or Masjid Dhubab. The small mosque stands on its hill in the north-west of Madinah, not far from Mount Sal'. It is currently closed to visitors, but it can be seen from the road and is worth noting when visiting the area of the Trench.
