The Makkah Museum occupies al-Zahir Palace in the north of Makkah, built in 1365 AH (1946) on the order of King Abdulaziz as a guest palace. It served as a school from 1958 and was restored and opened as the museum of Makkah's history and heritage in 1427 AH (2006). Its halls cover the archaeology of Saudi Arabia, prehistory and the natural history of the region, Makkah before Islam, the life of Nabi Muhammad ﷺ, the development of Arabic script, Islamic coins, the Hajj routes and the building history of Masjid al-Haram, with models of the Haram and the holy sites. A visitor reported in July 2026 that the museum had closed for about a year, so it is worth checking before visiting.
