Zumurrud was a station of the Syrian Hajj road south of Al-Ula, where the Ottomans built a fort and a pool to store water for the caravans. The Hejaz Railway later built its Zumurrud station on the same spot. The forts of the route stored provisions, including food for the pilgrims' return journey, and gave shelter to the poor, to lost travellers and to those separated from their caravans. The fort and pool stand in the desert about 50 km south of Al-Ula. It is one of the sites of the Syrian Hajj Road, which Saudi Arabia has placed on UNESCO's Tentative List.
