Al-Habala is an old village on a ledge of the Asir escarpment some 300 metres below the clifftop, about an hour's drive from Abha. Its name comes from the Arabic for rope, as for generations its people climbed to and from the village by rope ladders, carrying their goods with them. A cable car built in the 1990s carries visitors from the clifftop park down to the village, whose old stone houses open in the high season as cafés and a small museum. The clifftop gives wide views over the mountains towards Tihamah. The cable car and parts of the park have been closed for long periods, so it is worth checking before going.
