Al-Muwaylih Fort was built by the Ottomans in the sixteenth century to protect the wells of al-Muwaylih and the pilgrim caravans travelling between Egypt and the Hijaz along the Red Sea coast. The traveller Richard Burton passed through in 1878 and recorded how few caravans still used the road by then. The square stone fort with its corner towers has been restored and stands on the edge of al-Muwaylih village, north of Duba. It is one of the sites of the Egyptian Hajj Road, which Saudi Arabia has placed on UNESCO's Tentative List.
