Al-Mu'azzam was a station of the Syrian Hajj road south of Tabuk. The Ottomans built a fort here in the seventeenth century beside a large stone pool that stored rainwater for the caravans. The forts of the route stored provisions, including food for the pilgrims' return journey, and gave shelter to the poor, to lost travellers and to those separated from their caravans. The square fort and its great pool stand in the desert south-east of Tabuk, not far from the al-Mu'azzam station of the Hejaz Railway. It is one of the sites of the Syrian Hajj Road, which Saudi Arabia has placed on UNESCO's Tentative List.
