About Al-Khadra Masjid, Nablus

Al-Khadra, the Green Mosque, is also known as Hizn Sayyidina Ya'qub, the Sorrow of Nabi Ya'qub. Local tradition holds that this is where Nabi Ya'qub grieved after his sons brought him the bloodstained shirt of Nabi Yusuf, and a small room off the courtyard is kept as the place where he sat and wept. The building was a Samaritan synagogue and later a Crusader church before the Mamluks made it a mosque in 1290, in the reign of Sultan Qalawun, as its foundation inscription records. Its square stone minaret, about 30 metres tall, rises over the south-western quarter of the old city on the lower slopes of Mount Gerizim.
