The al-Hanbali family of Nablus founded this mosque in the 1520s and gave it their name, and the family still looks after it today. Ancient stone columns with carved capitals, probably from Roman or Byzantine buildings, were reused in the prayer hall. A wooden box in the mosque is said to hold three hairs of the Prophet ﷺ, and it is brought out each year on the 27th of Ramadan for worshippers to see. The minaret was rebuilt in 1913. The mosque lies off Jami' al-Kabir Street in the old city, west of the Great Masjid of Nablus and south of the main square.
