Al-Nasr, the Mosque of Victory, stands on the main square of Nablus old city and is often called the symbol of the city. The site was a Byzantine church and then a small Crusader church, which the Mamluks turned into a mosque with three aisles. Local tradition holds that this is the spot where the sons of Nabi Ya'qub brought him the torn shirt of Nabi Yusuf. The earthquake of 1927 destroyed the old mosque, and the Supreme Muslim Council rebuilt it in 1935 in a new design, with the prayer hall on the upper floor under a green dome. The Ottoman clock tower stands beside it on the square, and the Nablusi soap factory and the old markets are a few steps away.
