Mihr al-Nisa, known as Nur Jahan, was the wife of the emperor Jahangir and one of the most powerful women of Mughal history, issuing coins in her own name. After his death she lived quietly in Lahore until her own death in 1645, and she was buried in the tomb she had built for herself at Shahdara. Her daughter Ladli Begum is buried beside her. The tomb is a square red sandstone building with arched galleries on a raised platform in its own garden, a short distance from the tombs of Jahangir and Asif Khan. Much of its marble and decoration was lost over the centuries, and it has been under restoration in recent years.
