Abu al-Hasan Asif Khan was the brother of the empress Nur Jahan, the father of Mumtaz Mahal and the chief minister of Shah Jahan. He died in Lahore in 1641, and Shah Jahan had his tomb built in the Shahdara garden complex between the tombs of Jahangir and Nur Jahan. It is an octagonal tomb with a tall bulbous dome set in the middle of a charbagh garden. The building was once faced in marble and glazed tile, and although most of that covering has gone, the brick vaults and fragments of tile work and painted plaster can still be seen. It has been under restoration in recent years.
