Government College University was founded in 1864 and moved in 1877 into its present neo-Gothic building on Lower Mall, with its tall clock tower. It is one of the oldest and most respected colleges in South Asia. Muhammad Iqbal studied here, taking his MA in philosophy in 1899, and later taught at the college. The red-brick main building, the Oval ground and the lawns can be seen from the main gate, and visits inside are by permission.
