The Punjab Public Library was founded in 1884 in the baradari of Nawab Wazir Khan, the garden pavilion built in the 1630s by Shah Jahan's governor of Lahore, the builder of the Wazir Khan Mosque. The library holds a large collection of books, newspapers and rare Arabic, Persian and Urdu manuscripts. The Mughal pavilion with its corner turrets still stands at the heart of the library on Library Road, near the Mall.
