Muhammad ibn Ya'qub al-Kulayni, who passed away in Baghdad in 329 AH, was one of the foremost hadith scholars of the Shia and the compiler of al-Kafi, the first and best known of their four principal collections of hadith. He came from the village of Kulayn near Rayy and spent the last part of his life teaching in Baghdad. His shrine, with its blue dome, is part of the old Asifiya mosque complex on the Tigris at the Rusafa end of the Shuhada Bridge, beside the al-Wazir mosque and a short walk from the Mustansiriya.
