About Takiyya of Taqi al-Din al-Bistami

The takiyya of Taqi al-Din al-Bistami began in 1297 as a zawiya founded by the Sufi shaykh Taqi al-Din Rajab al-Bistami for his followers. Sultan al-Zahir Jaqmaq rebuilt and enlarged it in 1443 as a lodge for Sufis and the poor, many of them from Persia and Central Asia, and under the Ottomans it housed Sufis from Bukhara and Uzbekistan. The building stands in Darb al-Labbana below the Citadel, with a striped stone portal and rooms around a small courtyard. It was restored in recent years as part of the work on the Bab al-Wazir area and reopened in 2018. The madrasa of Jawhar al-Lala and Bayt al-Mi'mar al-Misri are a few steps away.
