Al-Rifa'i Mosque was commissioned by Khushyar Hanim, mother of Khedive Isma'il, and built between 1869 and 1912 on the site of the older zawiya of al-Rifa'i. It holds the shrine of Ali Abu Shubbak, a descendant of Ahmad al-Rifa'i, and the shrine of Yahya al-Ansari. It was designed to match the Sultan Hasan Mosque opposite, and it also holds the tombs of the khedival family, including Khedive Isma'il and King Fuad. It stands on Salah al-Din Square below the Citadel.
