The madrasa and khanqah of Sultan al-Zahir Barquq was built in 1384 to 1386 for the first of the Circassian Mamluk sultans. It housed teachers and students of the four schools of law and a community of Sufis. Its bronze-plated doors lead to a courtyard and a prayer hall with a painted wooden ceiling held up by ancient granite columns. It stands on al-Muizz Street beside the Qalawun and al-Nasir Muhammad complexes, and Barquq is buried in his khanqah in the northern cemetery.
