Sariya ibn Zunaym was the Companion leading an army in Persia when Umar ibn al-Khattab, preaching in Madinah, called out 'O Sariya, the mountain!', and the army heard the call and took the high ground. The mosque in the Citadel that carries his name is honoured as his resting place. The present mosque was built in 1528 by the Ottoman governor Sulayman Pasha in the northern enclosure of the Citadel, and is the first Ottoman-style mosque in Egypt, with green-tiled domes and a pencil minaret. It is known to Cairenes as the mosque of Sidi Sariya.
