Sayyiduna Muhammad ibn al-Hanafiyya was the son of Imam Ali ibn Abi Talib and Khawla of the Banu Hanifa, and passed away in 80 AH. This shrine in the Bab al-Wazir cemetery is one of the places in Cairo honoured as his grave. Another is the room beside the mausoleum of Uqba ibn Amir in the Qarafa, and al-Baqi' in Madinah is also honoured as his grave. The shrine is a short walk from the Blue Mosque of Aqsunqur.
