Sayyid Muhammad Wafa, born in Alexandria in 702 AH and descended from Sayyiduna al-Hasan ibn Ali, followed the path of Abu al-Hasan al-Shadhili and became the first master of the Wafa'iyya branch. He took the name Wafa, Mazarat Misr tells, after the Nile rose in answer to his prayer in a year when the flood failed. He passed away in Cairo in 765 AH and is buried here. The Sadat al-Wafa'iyya mosque stands at the foot of al-Muqattam, near the tombs of Ibn Ata Allah and Abu al-Su'ud. Mazarat Misr says that more than twenty awliya of the family lie within its walls.
