Abu al-Su'ud ibn Abi al-Asha'ir was born in Wasit in Iraq and became one of the Sufi masters of Egypt, known for refining the manners of his disciples. Mazarat Misr explains that he taught a middle way: the self is a trust from God that should be given the food and rest it needs, never starved or left to its whims, and lawful earning and pure food purify the body. He passed away in Cairo in 644 AH. The remains of his zawiya, with his tomb, stand at the foot of al-Muqattam near the tomb of Ibn Ata Allah, about 200 metres from the Sadat al-Wafa'iyya mosque.
