Shaykh Muhammad Mutawalli al-Sha'rawi was born in Daqadus in 1911 and became the best-known Qur'an commentator of modern Egypt. He taught at al-Azhar and in Makkah, and his weekly lessons on the meanings of the Qur'an reached millions across the Muslim world. He passed away in 1998 and was buried in his home village. His mausoleum and mosque stand in Daqadus, on the edge of Mit Ghamr in Dakahlia. Visitors come every day of the year, and the site is well kept.
